DESCRIPTION:Andrew Robertson\, professor at the Graduate Center at the City University of New York and Owego resident presents on voting in the early U.S.\, from the American Revolution to the Civil War. \nWidowed and single women could vote in New Jersey from 1776 until 1807.  Black men could vote in many northern states from the 1770s until the 1830s.  Property restrictions started to disappear in the North in the 1790s.  By 1800\, about a third of Americans lived in free states with something close to universal manhood suffrage. \nJoin us October 22nd\, 2024 at 5:30 pm to learn more about the history of democracy and voting in the U.S.

DESCRIPTION:AGES TEEN AND ABOVE \nIt’s your move!  Want to increase your memory and concentration or practice logical thinking skills?  Develop your existing chess skills against other players in a friendly environment.  Players of all abilities are welcome.  If you have a chess board\, bring it along.  We’ll have a few but it’s better to have too many than too few!  Library materials are available for further learning. \nThere will also be a chess set available in the gaming closet for in-library use at any time.  That means you can practice anytime at the library. \nChess club is a recurring event that takes place on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 5:30pm. We meet on the 2nd floor in the Eva Thomas room.  Elevator access is available at the rear library entrance. \nRegistration is encouraged and appreciated.
